"...Sinds er mensen zijn, maken zij dingen met een functie. Aanvankelijk als verlenging
van het lichaam: een holle boomstam, pijl en boog, een stenen bijl, een houten
hark. In principe is dat nog zo, maar dankzij de industrialisering kwam er steeds
meer van hetzelfde. Ook de verpakking: zelfs een tandenborstel of een paar simpele
schroeven worden geleverd in even onvermijdelijk als vaak moeilijk te verwijderen
plastic. In deze cultuur van de letterlijke verveling verloren de dingen hun
geheim. Door isolering, geringe verandering of onderlinge combinatie ontneemt
Schoutsen de dingen hun functie en ontstaat fictie: voorwerpen die tot de verbeelding
spreken, de fantasie prikkelen, op het verkeerde been zetten, te denken geven,
louter esthetische kwaliteiten hebben, kortom: kunst, meubilair voor de geest.
Soms duiken in titels of anderszins de initialen van de kunstenaar op: PS, maar
je zou die ook kunnen lezen als een typering van zijn werk: een postscriptum
bij de eenduidigheid... "

"...Man has always been making things with a particular function. At first as
an extension of the body: a hollow log, bow and arrow, a stone ax, a wooden rake.
In fact this still goes on, but along with the industrialisation came reproduction.
Packaging too: even a toothbrush or a few screws are delivered in an often hard
to remove plastic container. In this culture of boredom things lost their secrets.
By isolation, small alteration or combination, Schoutsen deprives things of their
function, which results in fiction: objects appealing to the imagination, stimulate
fantasy, confuse, induce thinking, only possessing aesthetic qualities, in other
words: art, mental furniture. Now and then the initials of the artist appear
in the titles: PS, but one could read this as a definition of his work: a postscript
to uniformity.... "
